State law and guidance
Oklahoma's AI statute took effect July 1, 2026, and requires a district policy before the 2027-28 school year. It calls for educator-directed use and annual written disclosure to parents concerning student-facing AI, while permitting a parent or guardian to opt a student out of that use in writing without academic penalty. This is an opt-out, not Houston's advance opt-in. Families should seek the tool/vendor disclosure and opt-out channel; students should be offered the protected alternative; teachers retain oversight; leaders need an inventory, a workable notice and a compliant local policy. The state published updated guidance in July 2026. [38][15]
