Classroom AI, state by state

States write a law or a memo. Districts pick the tools.

Who may use AI, which products are named, and whether a person has to make the final call on grades, discipline, or placement. Each figure links to a source.

This page tracks how U.S. states and school districts treat AI in the classroom.

States can pass a law, send a memo, or say nothing, but students and teachers follow the local rule, including which products a district approves or blocks.

That gap matters: a state memo does not tell you whether ChatGPT is allowed, or whether software can assign a grade.

This is not every district in the country. It is the 51 statewide rules plus the 82 district policies we could document, each linked to a named source.

State rules and researched district policies

The map and district file below are interactive. This list is the same statewide rules and district policies, in writing.

What the researched set shows

9 states have a classroom AI law in force. 30 issued guidance. 12 have no statewide rule.

8 state rules require districts to write a local policy.

Where a district writes a student AI rule, it usually limits students more than it lets them use it. In this set, 42 researched student rules are coded restricted and 5 are coded allowed.

Most districts that write a teacher rule allow teachers to use AI. 58 of 74 researched teacher rules are coded allowed.

Google (Gemini / NotebookLM) is the name districts approve most often in this set (23 districts). OpenAI (ChatGPT) is the name they block most often (8 districts).

Districts name approved or piloted tools at similar rates whether the state has a law, guidance, or no rule.
