Overview
Montclair Public Schools, New Jersey
Montclair's magnet system "was implemented originally as a voluntary desegregation plan in 1977," in the district's words. The historical perspective says the plan began with two magnet programs and that the first magnet schools opened in September 1977. The district says the plan has grown continually since. The Policy 5122 record adds that "In 1974 Montclair’s Plan of Action was modified to provide Freedom of Choice (currently, School Placement Request) for parents" and that the option "was added to the State-approved desegregation plan of magnet schools."951
In February 2010 the Board approved a new enrollment and assignment-by-zone policy. The district says the township was divided into three zones and that students from all three zones are represented in each school. The report describes the three zones as roughly equal in population. After sibling, English-learner and special-education priorities, a computerized system randomly assigns students using ranked family preferences. The district's April 15, 2026 enrollment report describes the school-selection policy as effective June 17, 2013 and says the zones were drawn from five equally weighted factors in 2010 census data. The exact policy wording appears in School Placement.952
The district now lists two middle schools after the 2026 restructuring. Educational Pathways covers the preschool consolidation, MELA's August 2026 opening and its opening count. The published feeder chart sends Nishuane to Hillside. Bradford, Northeast and Watchung feed Buzz Aldrin. Edgemont and Hillside feed Glenfield. The same chart lists Bullock feeding Renaissance, so Bullock's middle-school path needs registrar confirmation.31266
Montclair does not assign children to the nearest elementary school. Families rank schools, the district runs a placement process, and the Board keeps final authority. For 2026–27 elementary entry, online registration opened February 10, placement request forms opened March 10, and requests were due April 7 at 11:59 p.m. Mini-Mounties preschool is free for Montclair residents with a child who is 3 by October 1 and younger than 5 by October 1. Families must live in town when they apply. The lottery is random, and families rank every location. An offer comes with 30 days to complete registration and upload residency, a birth certificate, health records and immunization proof. MELA's tentative 2027–28 timeline lists an information session on December 17, 2026, site tours January 6–14, 2027, a lottery open January 15–29, and placement notices in early March 2027.13814
District ELA proficiency rose from 61.8% in 2021–22 to 69.4% in 2023–24. Math rose from 45.9% to 55.3% over the same years. The state four-year graduation rate was 95.0% for the 2022 cohort and 94.3% for 2023. It was 92.9% for 2024. Each rate was above the statewide rate. The five-year rate was 95.9%, 96.6% and 96.7%. The federal four-year rate for 2024 was 85.4%, below the state federal rate of 87.7%. The federal calculation leaves out some students with disabilities. Chronic absenteeism fell from 13.1% to 9.1%. In 2023–24, 67.4% of 11th and 12th graders took at least one AP or IB course. The statewide rate was 35.9%. Dual enrollment was 10.8%, against 26.9% statewide. Students took 1,088 AP or IB exams. Of those, 986 scored at least 3 on AP or 4 on IB.30
Capital work remains active. Through August 2026 the referendum program had a $111,131,934 budget, $99,039,589 awarded and $64,443,894 paid. The outlook from the September 16, 2026 board presentation: Montclair High's heating and electrical work was 49% complete and on track, the auditorium was 95% complete and delayed, and Edgemont's renovation was at 0% because the contractor had not mobilized. The same presentation lists Nishuane at 85%, Bradford at 34%, Buzz Aldrin at 28% and Glenfield at 11%. The Board adopted Policy 2365 on October 14, 2026. It bars generative AI use in pre-K through grade 8 and limits grades 9–12 to authorized use. New Jersey's phone-free schools law took effect January 8, 2026, and requires district device policies.63646591
For a buyer, placement comes first. A nearby house carries no seat. Check the current feeder path and ask whether a pre-K room operates at the building. Set the tax figure into the monthly budget. The registrar lists Jasmine Malloy at 973-509-4020 x50303 for K-8 and preschool questions. If a specific school matters, rank it first and keep the April request deadline. The house search can run on its own track.13571012
